It is not a requirement for the same input to display on more than one output. I've now started experimenting with HDMI matrixes/matrix switches and can't seem to find a solution that meets my needs: The problem is that this solution doesn't scale to multiple inputs and more than two outputs (and calls for a heck of a lot of cables to boot): I started with 1X2 physical switches which did the trick for a while and achieved my goal of having the inputs and outputs "directly" connected, and I never had to worry about EDID management and could always take full advantage of the capabilities of the display. For example, the monitor supports 1440p and allows me to play the Series X on 1440p at 120Hz. The displays can all accept a 4K signal, but each have different properties that I want to take advantage of. And many times, because it scans for active components, the cable box (which is always on) would override the PS4. I taught it what it was, but it never had a selection for HDMI 4 that I didn't have to manually input. I had a Zettaguard 4x1 HDMI switch from Amazon that was a good deal and a popular one, but the Harmony remote didn't have specs for it. I have a Harmony Elite with multiple activities set up, but it's never quite worked right and the sticking point is always 1 item: the HDMI source.
